Stage Performance; Tips to Make Your Next Show Shine
Last time we talked about stage presence, including showing emotion in your face and the Dice Method. Now we get into a more technical side of performing, and how to provide the most enjoyable performance for your audience.
01. Holding the Microphone
A common mistake that singers and performers make is holding the microphone incorrectly. In order to produce the most clear and effective sound, your microphone should be perpendicular to your mouth. Holding it at too low of an angle can affect the volume of your voice coming through the speakers. It should be horizontal to your mouth, as if it was on a mic stand.
02. Understand The Emotion
The emotion of the piece you are singing can allow you to convey the message properly. The emotion of the piece can change dynamics, the styling and the pacing just to name a few. Is it a sad song that transitions to a happier message? Is it a passionate power-ballad about a loved one leaving you? Is it an angry vengeful breakup song? The way you sing a piece directly correlates to the story the song is telling the audience. Really reflect on how this song makes you feel and how it should make your audience feel.
03. Take Feedback Often
Sometimes we hear our own voice so often that we overlook things that we could improve on. Having someone- a fellow singer or otherwise- to listen to your piece is a good idea to do often. Sometimes it’s necessary to have a fresh ear and a second opinion.
04. Avoid Certain Foods
Have you ever noticed needing to clear your throat more after eating a slice of pizza or enjoying a cup of milk? Dairy specifically creates more phlegm build-up in our throats, which can prevent an ability to sing. Before a big performance, avoid dairy at all costs. Save the pasta with cheese for afterwards.
